This amazing blackberry basil margarita is so simple to make and uses fresh blackberries fresh basil leaves and a slice of lime which makes it perfect for a hot day in the spring and summer!
This is exactly the kind of drink I want in the warmer months; fresh, simple and not at all too sweet. All the ingredients can easily be found at a regular grocery store. Fresh herbs are one of my favorite ways to add color and flavor to drinks. One of my favorite cocktails is from a bar in San Diego which makes a drinks using a Thai basil infused liquor. It’s out of this world!
I’m thinking of starting a cocktail series for fall and winter! Feel Good Fridays is what I’ll call it. I’ll share cocktails that are perfect and set the mood for the seasons. If you’re interested in that, I’d love to hear your thoughts below in the comments!
For the last few months, I’ve been wanting to share more cocktail recipes and get better at the art of cocktail making. I made this refreshing cocktail a handful of times throughout summer and thought it would be a great recipe to send off summer and work our way into the cozy seasons!
How to make a blackberry basil margarita
To make this blackberry margarita recipe, you only need a handful of ingredients:
Fresh blackberries – They’re the best when they’re in season which is why I really only make this in the spring and summer
Fresh basil leaves – Just like the fresh blackberries, basil thrives in the summer, is the most cost effective time to buy it and ends up tasting the best in the spring and summer.
Simple syrup – So easy to make. Check out my baklava recipe to make a batch of this.
Silver tequila/blanco tequila – Can’t make a margarita without it
Orange liqueur – It’s not a margarita without this either
Fresh lime juice – Another fresh element
Kosher salt for the rim – A contrast to the sweet and fresh vibe of the easy cocktail
In a cocktail shaker or a small mason jar with a fitting lid, muddle blackberries, freshly torn basil and simple syrup. The fresh, juicy blackberries will add so much flavor to the cocktail and the basil flavors come through when you muddle them all together. Muddle everything down until the fresh berries release their juices and you can really smell those basil sprig Add in some ice cubes, fresh lime juice, silver tequila and orange liqueur. Shake shake shake it well to combine it all together. The splash of orange liquor is what really makes it a margarita.
Prep your cocktail glasses
Add some kosher salt to a small plate and rim each cocktail glass with a lime wedge so the salt will stick. Roll the rim of the glass into the salt, then strain the refreshing drink into 2 cocktail glasses filled with ice. Pour the margarita into the cocktail or margarita glasses and you have one of the most easy cocktails you can make for a spring or summer gathering, BBQ or any backyard party. Top the drink with additional blackberries and basil sprigs for a little something extra – fresh fruit on top of the margarita always adds a bit extra curb appeal and I think it can make the drink look even more appetizing. You can even add another thin slice of lime in there for more dimension.
Switch it up:
- Use gold tequila instead of silver
- Try it with sweet and juicy blueberries instead of blackberries if that’s what you have. Or get creative and use another seasonal fresh fruit.
This blackberry basil margarita is such a simple cocktail that tastes amazing and just LOOK at that beautiful color! So vibrant and inviting. This is especially true in the summer when luscious blackberries are looking and tasting their best. I just know you’re going to love this one and I can’t wait to share more fun, seasonal cocktails like this one!
